Though I Do Not Understand

                         'In pastures green?
                         Not always; sometimes He
Who knoweth best, in kindness leadeth me
                         in weary ways, where heavy shadows be;
out of the sunshine, warm and soft and bright,
out of the sunshine into darkest night.
I oft would faint with sorrow and affright,
only for this:  I know He holds my hand.
So whether in green or desert land
I trust Him, though I do not understand.'

  1. Nancy,

Oh this expresses so well those dark times when it is easy to think we have been abandoned. Of course God is still there right by our side.

Isn't the lady's coat wide? I wonder if she has layers and layers of clothes underneath. It certainly looks cold enough for bundling up!

    1. This painting really "grabs" me, Sue... I think because she looks like she has lost her bearings just a bit. At least she's dressed for the cold!! I wonder if this is how ladies looked when wearing coats over long, full, petticoat (crinoline) lined dresses of an earlier age? At least they were warm!

      Thanks, Sue!

  2. Nancy I so appreciate you sharing these honest and helpful little insights into the spiritual life.
A life that is certainly not all sunshine and roses...but so worth it!

    1. Indeed it IS worth it, Trish; indeed it is. I suspect we have no idea HOW worth it while we're on this earth. Thank you!

  3. Hi, I found your blog recently and love it. I've shared a few posts to Facebook that includes the picture that goes along with it as it really grabs the attention. Do you know why sometimes when going to share it to FB, the picture isn't available as one of the choices for a "thumbnail"? This post happens to be one of them. Thanks!

    1. Thank you so much, Charmaine, and how nice to know you're here :) ! I have no idea why that happens sometimes with Facebook and at other times it doesn't. I've only been on FB for a few months, but have had the same experience (my FB profile photo is a "grille" - latticework - in case you ever wonder which of the Nancy Shumans there is me!... I've turned out to have a rather common FB name!). Sometimes I save the image to my computer (all of the ones I use are public domain unless I state otherwise), post it as a photo, then put in the link. More cumbersome and not as "neat," but I've done it with links from myself and others when I've really wanted to use the picture.

Thanks again for your kind words.
